Credibility

by David on May 9, 2012

In business what is the most difficult thing to obtain but the easiest thing to lose? The answer: Credibility. It can take years to establish a level of credibility with clients and industry associates, yet it takes only one single even to destroy credibility.

The two most common situations which result in a loss of credibility are (1) misrepresentation and (2) poor crisis management. Losing credibility for misrepresentation is the direct consequence for a bad conscious decision or behavior. However, the loss of credibility resulting from poor crisis management is the negative outcome of inefficiencies and poor management techniques. [Read more…]

Addiction

by David on May 7, 2012

Addiction is a serious issue in this nation. Addiction comes in many forms. The most commonly recognized form of addiction is substance abuse, alcoholism, gambling and smoking, but addiction comes in many forms. I (like most people) have had friends, family, and/or co-workers who have struggled with addictions.

I don’t drink or smoke. It could potentially be argued that caffeine may border as an addiction, but it is difficult to truly understand addiction unless it has been personally experienced. It has been described as an overwhelming pull or desire which is all-consuming. With that said….I may be an addict. I believe I may be addicted to Angry Birds. [Read more…]

The Magical Mystical Egg

by David on April 13, 2012

It is about a week after Easter, yet there is still a sense of Easter in the air. Many view Easter as a time to celebrate the resurrection. Many view Easter as a morning to feast with friends and family. However, virtually all children view Easter as the day of the Easter Bunny and the Easter Egg Hunt.

Due to weather conditions the Easter Egg Hunt was moved indoors. It was a massive hunt consisting of approximately 4 dozen eggs. I was proud of where I strategically positioned each and every egg – not all of them would be an easy find this year. It was a great time by all. However, about a week later an incredibly foul odor was propelling itself throughout the entire house. [Read more…]

The Art of Repetition

by David on March 21, 2012

One of the greatest fears of most people is the fear of public speaking. In fact, many studies have revealed that the fear of public speaking actually ranks higher than the fear of death. What is it about public speaking that creates such anxiety? I recall the first speech that I was required to give during my college required Speech class. My initial thought was to give a speech that directed the visual focus of the audience away from me. Although I was successful in achieving this goal, the end result was a feral squirrel frantically running loose in the classroom. [Read more…]

Awkwardly Close Companion

by David on March 19, 2012

It was a very cold and stormy day to be traveling. The flight was delayed due to weather conditions, but the good news was that the flight would be only about a third full – which typically means one passenger per row. I was the 40th passenger to enter the plane with only about 20 more passengers to enter behind me. I strategically selected a window seat anticipating the turbulence. The window seat would allow my head to lean against the wall versus doing a bobble-head impersonation while sleeping. [Read more…]

Becoming a Historian

by David on February 27, 2012

While speaking with a youthful employee it became apparent that I am becoming a historian. Although I may not be a historian in the traditional definition, I have definitely become a historian in practicality. At the golden age of 45, I find myself explaining to a person half my age that the amount of music that they can listen to on their iPod is more than double a trunk full of 8-track tapes.

To add insult to injury, this person had absolutely no reference point to an 8-track tape. The absurdity of the conversation was my excitement when providing the explanation of the 8-track tape. The convenient size (which is equal to a small book) was difficult to explain – especially given that an iPod is probably one-fourth the size of a single 8-track tape. [Read more…]

Delayed Response

by David February 15, 2012

How many times have you thought of the perfect response to a statement or argument but not until long after the opportunity had past? Although the immediate emotion upon discovery of response is typically that of frustration due to the late timing, in reality the delayed brain reaction in creating a critical (and often hurtful) response is […]

When Life Becomes Cumbersome

by David February 13, 2012

Have you ever had one of those mornings when you wake up anxious because you have so many tasks ahead of you at work and seemingly not enough time in the day to complete them all? I had one of those mornings recently, however, to add insult to injury I was a couple hours late arriving to work […]

Accountability

by David February 10, 2012

Parenting is a challenge  –  especially during situations in which you want to do one thing but you know in your heart the right thing to do is something else. Often such parenting challenges occur when teaching a child a life lesson. As a parent it is critical that we stay strong during these situations as they are important bricks that […]

Networking Opportunities

by David February 8, 2012

Networking is one of the most critical elements to a person’s success. However, often people mistakenly view networking as a very structured event  –  such as business forums or gatherings. In actuality, every day offers various networking situations (both professionally and personally). Success is first achieved by recognizing a networking opportunity and then seizing the opportunity.
